At the gracious invitation of Ms. Kaoutar KRIKOU, Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, the President of the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council, Professor Mohamed BOUKHARI, took part on Monday, 3 November 2025, at the National Army Circle, in the proceedings of the national colloquium entitled: “The environmental impacts of colonialism in Africa: historical realities and ecological aftermath – Algeria as a case study.”
Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life in coordination with the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights-holders, the colloquium was attended by the two concerned ministers, the Minister of Communication, as well as the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for African Affairs. The gathering also brought together numerous senior officials, professors, researchers and representatives of various national bodies and institutions.
The colloquium sought to shed light on the environmental consequences of French colonialism in Africa and to examine the enduring effects of colonial crimes, for which successive generations continue to bear the cost. These effects constitute a proven ecological crime, having left deep impacts on human beings, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
Through the Algerian example, the colloquium aims to offer a comparative approach that contributes to a deeper understanding of this colonial legacy from the perspective of environmental justice and the right of peoples to a healthy, balanced and sustainable environment.
