The National Economic, Social and Environmental Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, hosted a consultative workshop on April 28, 2026, at the El Aurassi Hotel in Algiers, dedicated to the preparation of Algeria's Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The gathering brought together counselors to the Presidency of the Republic, members of both houses of Parliament, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Algeria, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), representatives of government institutions, and international experts.
The workshop was officially opened by Professor Mohamed Boukhari, NESEC President, alongside Mr. Sofiane Chaib, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad.
The morning session featured remarks by Ms. Natacha van Rijn, UNDP Resident Representative in Algeria, and concluded with a presentation by Mr. Kamel Oukaci, Director General of the National Office of Statistics (ONS), followed by an overview from a national expert detailing the key findings and preliminary outcomes of the second draft review.
In his opening address, NESEC President Prof. Boukhari stated : "Since adopting the 2030 Agenda in 2015, Algeria has been resolutely committed to embedding the Sustainable Development Goals into its national policies by establishing institutional coordination and monitoring mechanisms, as well as mobilizing all sectors."
This consultative workshop forms an integral part of preparations for Algeria’s Second VNR, which the country will present at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York this July. This inclusive process actively engages national operators, particularly civil society organizations and academic institutions, reflecting the participatory nature of the initiative. As an annual international platform to evaluate progress toward the 2030 Agenda, the summit offers Algeria the opportunity to present a transparent, comprehensive assessment highlighting both national achievements and existing challenges in line with its commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Prof. Boukhari further emphasized that "sustainable development is an indivisible, collective responsibility," noting that the gathering forms part of broader efforts to engage diverse operators, particularly civil society organizations, in articulating their perspectives on progress achieved, ongoing challenges and national priorities to accelerate SDG implementation.
Furthermore, the workshop aims to place the contributions of non-governmental actors and the academic community at the very heart of the report. These consultations served to voice participants' concerns and highlight local development priorities by integrating civil society proposals alongside evidence-based analyses from universities and research centers. This participatory approach provides the report with an integrated, field-grounded scientific dimension that accurately reflects the realities and multifaceted challenges of national development.
The Second VNR represents a key milestone in evaluating SDG implementation in Algeria, showcasing national progress, addressing ongoing challenges and outlining future perspectives. It underscores Algeria’s determination to drive inclusive, sustainable growth while reinforcing its active presence in global dialogues surrounding the 2030 Agenda.
The workshop's proceedings were structured into two distinct thematic breakout sessions :
Workshop 1 — The Social Dimension: Evaluated national progress across key SDGs, including Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Beyond the thematic presentations, the interactive exchanges yielded actionable, well-grounded recommendations aimed at enhancing quality of life and reducing social disparities.
Workshop 2 — The Economic Dimension: Focused on reviewing national milestones in water resource management, infrastructure development, innovation, sustainable urban development and partnership strengthening. These interactive discussion sessions culminated in concrete proposals to foster sustainable economic growth and optimize resource efficiency.
