The General Assembly of the Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions concluded on Thursday, 23 October 2025, in Algiers. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council (NESEC) under the chairmanship of Professor Mohamed BOUKHARI, President of the Council and President of the Union.

This Assembly was attended by the presidents and representatives of the economic and social councils and similar institutions of the following countries: the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of the Sudan, the State of Palestine, the Republic of Lebanon, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Republic of Yemen.

The meeting provided a privileged forum for exchanging perspectives and expertise on ways to strengthen joint Arab action in economic, social and environmental development and on mechanisms to enhance the role of economic and social councils in supporting decision-making across the Arab world.

Participating delegations expressed their sincere thanks and gratitude to the Algerian authorities for their generous hospitality and warm reception. They also commended the substantial efforts made by the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council (NESEC) to ensure the General Assembly success and praised the initiatives it has undertaken to revitalise and strengthen the Union’s activities during its presidency. Accordingly, members of the Union’s General Assembly unanimously requested and approved an extension of the Algerian NESEC’s presidency of the Union for an additional renewable year, after an evaluation of the achievements realized during the current term.

Union Members also conveyed their deep appreciation to Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, for approving the allocation of a permanent headquarters for the Union in Algiers, thereby demonstrating strong support for the continuity and reinforcement of joint Arab action.

Professor Mohamed BOUKHARI, President of the NESEC and President of the Union, officially inaugurated the new headquarters during an evening ceremony on Thursday in the presence of the Union’s guests. The new headquarters is located at 05 Avenue Mazouni El Biar municipality, Algiers.

Finally, the participating delegations called for efforts to strengthen and widen the Union’s activities by promoting the role of economic and social councils as essential platforms for dialogue among society’s various operators, particularly in the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public policies. 

They further urged Arab countries that do not yet have economic and social councils or similar institutions to establish such bodies in order to reinforce national consultation and public participation in decision-making throughout the Arab region.
