On 15 December 2025, the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council (NESEC), which currently presides over the Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (UAESCSI), convened a study day via videoconference under the theme “Water Security and Energy Security in the Arab World.”

The meeting was chaired by Professor Mohamed Boukhari, President of the NESEC and of UAESCSI. Participants included the Union’s Vice‑President, who is also President of the Economic and Social Council of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, along with representatives of the presidents of the economic and social councils of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the Lebanese Republic and the Republic of Tunisia.

The study day formed part of the Union’s agreed action plan aimed at strengthening coordination, consultation and the exchange of expertise among Arab countries on strategic issues related to water security and energy security. The event sought to promote shared understanding and to identify practical measures to address common challenges in these fields.

The session opened with a presentation by the Economic and Social Council of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on “Water Security in the Arab World,” which highlighted the current situation, the immediate and future challenges facing Arab states and a number of recommendations to address them.

In his remarks, Professor Mohamed Boukhari underscored Algeria’s major achievements in water security, notably the expansion of the national dam network, significant advances in seawater desalination and progress in wastewater treatment and purification.

On the subject of energy security in the Arab world, the NESEC of Algeria delivered a presentation outlining the principal challenges facing the sector, opportunities to strengthen regional energy security, and the central role expected of UAESCSI in helping to develop a common Arab vision on these matters.

The study day also provided a forum for in‑depth exchanges of views and experiences among participants, who emphasized the importance of adopting integrated, sustainable and realistic approaches to ensure the effectiveness of public policies in these strategic areas.

The President of the Union stressed the need to reinforce cooperation among Arab economic and social councils and similar institutions and to harmonize perspectives in order to formulate practical, targeted proposals capable of effectively supporting public policy across the Arab world.

The proceedings concluded with an address by the President of the Union calling for deeper consultation and coordination on these two strategic themes, which were described as essential levers for sustainable development and regional stability.
