As part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the United Nations system in Algeria, Professor Mohamed Boukhari, President of the Council, signed on the 2nd of September 2025, at the Council’s headquarters, the joint work program for 2025–2026 with Ms. Catarina Johansson, UNICEF Representative in Algeria.

At the outset of the meeting, the Council President highlighted that this signing forms part of the implementation of the Algeria–UNICEF Cooperation Program (2023–2027). It reflects a shared commitment to intensifying efforts in support of sustainable development and to ensuring enhanced protection and well-being for children and young people in Algeria.

He further noted that the joint work plan between the Council and UNICEF, covering the period 2025–2026, is the outcome of a long-standing partnership. It seeks to translate several key outcomes into practical and concrete actions, within a coherent framework of products and activities.

The President also underscored that issues relating to children and youth remain at the heart of the Council’s priorities, reflecting its unwavering commitment to contributing to the building of a bright and prosperous future for the nation.

In this context, the work plan signed between the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council and UNICEF is structured around three main pillars:

  • • Strengthening civic values and a sense of citizenship among young people, grounded in responsibility, solidarity and commitment, so that every young person becomes an active participant in shaping the country’s future.
  • • Fostering scientific thinking and openness to others by promoting a culture that values work, objectivity and rigor.
  • • Promoting scientific curiosity and intellectual openness through the development of a culture that prizes work, knowledge and innovation among children and youth, thereby preparing them for creativity and active participation in the nation’s progress.
  • • Promoting healthy eating habits among children and youth, recognising that good health ensures a better quality of life and constitutes a vital foundation for individual success, vitality and personal fulfilment, to the benefit of society as a whole.

For her part, Ms. Johansson commended the quality of the fruitful cooperation linking her organisation with the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council. She affirmed that the signing of this work plan guarantees the continuity and consolidation of this partnership, while highlighting Algeria’s efforts in the field of social protection.
